We are surrounded by programs for healthy eating. There are gorgeous cookbooks filled with full color food photos, and protocol presented for nearly every ailment. We enter this arena with our own perceptions of food, packed away with us from childhood, inheritance, and past choices. Another option for making your way through the maze is to start a conversation with your body.
Intuition Consultant and teacher, Deborah Kremins (intuitionmed.com), suggests a process to get this conversation going. She says that “since energy follows thought”, we need to start at the level of intention and begin with a series of questions followed by deep listening. Try these steps the next time you sit to enjoy a meal, (making you sure are indeed sitting and focusing on your meal.) :
- Begin by taking a few breaths and grounding yourself. Feel your connection with the energy of the earth. Kremins suggests sitting back into your intuitive center, which is located in the center of your brain, between your temples. Your analyzer is in the front part of your brain, so if you find yourself getting wrapped up in minutiae, move your awareness back, “Sit back into the alignment of your spine, giving yourself a 360 degree view. This gives you an immediate receptivity and ability to see the big picture.”
- A neutral first question could be, “Is this food in affinity with me, yes or no?” Listen for your body’s immediate reaction. If you start arguing internally about it, which often includes shoulds and wants, it means you’ve slipped back into your analyzer; recognize that and return to your intuitive center. One tool Kremins describes is creating an internal gauge. If you feel uncertain or emotionally invested in your body’s answer, pay attention the this internal dial, and notice it’s immediate response. “Trust the dial”, says Kremins.
- Bring into your intention and visualization the process of digestion, beginning with savoring what you are eating in your mouth. Imagine the steps of digestion, and invite your body to become fully active and engaged in that process, affirming that you are deriving the most nutritional benefit that is possible from what you are eating.
- As you eat, pause to close your eyes and thank your body for receiving nourishment. Be grateful to your body for transforming this food into vibrant energy. Notice how you feel after each bite, so that you don’t overburden your body with too much food. If you notice you want to keep eating even after you know you are done, shine a light on whatever attachments are there, physical or emotional. Affirm that you are finished eating.
Enjoy your next meal with this internal alignment and awareness of how your body is receiving what you are giving, and you may notice a new level of peace in the process.
