Joseph*, a seventeen-year-old high school football player with a strong athletic build, injured his back and hip in one of the first games of the season.
For several weeks, he was experiencing musculoskeletal pain and anxiety.
Joseph wanted to get back onto the field and to play at his peak level as soon as possible. He had a strong incentive to return to the game as quickly as possible, as he was under consideration from a talent scout evaluating him for possible recruitment for a college team that could offer him a full scholarship. Without this athletic scholarship, Joseph’s family’s financial situation would make it very difficult for him to attend college.
To help lessen the pain from his injuries, Joseph went to see physician Dr. Melanie A. Gold, professor of pediatrics at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and medical director of New York Presbyterian Hospital’s seven school-based health centers, for acupuncture treatment.
While the acupuncture helped alleviate some of his physical pain, Joseph told Dr. Gold that his anxiety was bubbling over. He was experiencing worry and fear that the pain from his injuries would flare up —and cause his confidence and skills to suffer— during an important upcoming game where the talent scout would be in attendance. Dr. Gold showed Joseph The Tapping Solution App and pointed out the Tapping meditations for “Releasing Pain” and “Releasing Anxiety.”
“Doctor, this can’t possibly work!” Joseph said, incredulously.
“I challenge you to explore it,” Dr. Gold encouraged. “Won’t it be interesting to see what happens when you check it out and see how much it makes you feel better?” She mentioned that it would take less than 10 minutes. Since many high school students Joseph’s age spend more time than that each day watching YouTube videos or sending messages to friends on Snapchat, Dr. Gold suggested that it was worth a shot to spend some of that time doing a Tapping meditation.
“Hey, so what ever happened with The Tapping Solution?” Dr. Gold asked Joseph during his next visit.
“You know, I did that Tapping thing and it actually really helped!” he said. “So, now I’m doing Tapping before I go out onto the football field — I find it helps me get focused.”
Explore The Tapping Solution App for yourself (it’s free!), and share it with the parents, teachers, children, and teens in your life who may be stressed about back to school during the Coronavirus Pandemic.
