Easy ways to fundraise for your favourite M.E. charity | 28 September 2018

Fundraising without the challenge…

Russell Fleming, Content Manager, ME Association.

We are often asked how people can support the ME Association without needing to do a sponsored event.

For those who are unable to do a physical challenge, or for the times when you just want to help in an easier way; there are now valued alternatives that will still mean you can support your favourite M.E. charity.

We’ve listed them all in the Get Involved section of our website but wanted to highlight several of the newer and perhaps more appealing ways in which you can support the ME Association.

Online shopping:

Recycling:

  • Free postage and/or collection of broken and unwanted jewellery, foreign bank notes, mobile phones, printer cartridges, cameras, gadgets, computer games… even that unwanted car!

Regular donations:

Membership:

  • Join the ME Association from only £2.00 a month.
  • Receive our truly excellent ME Essential magazine.
  • And, if you pay your subscription by annual standing order, you can choose 10 free £1 leaflets from the most extensive range on the internet!

Online shopping

eBay for Charity

We are thrilled to announce the relaunch of the ME Association’s charity page on eBay.

And what a colourful launch it is too, with Hatty Rickards selling some of her vibrant tapestry and cross stitch cushions and delightfully dressed rag dolls.

Hatty has generously offered to donate 75% of the proceeds of any sale she makes.

She says, “I have been making tapestry cushions for the last year to sell to raise money for the ME Association but because I am housebound I can’t do a craft stall myself. I would like to get my items sold to help your worthy cause.”

So now she’s set up her stall on eBay – and you can too – just visit our eBay page to review her wonderful crafts and make your purchases!

Donate when making a purchase:

By joining the eBay for Charity programme and making small changes to the way you use eBay, you can make a big difference to the ME Association. Make the ME Association your favourite charity on eBay today!

  • You will then be able to directly donate to the ME Association at checkout when you purchase any item, and,
  • As your favourite charity, you can easily donate a little extra if you want to do so.

Donate when selling:

You can now list items to sell on the ME Association’s charity page, and then decide how much of the sale price you want to donate to us. When finalising your listing:

  • simply turn on the option “Donate a portion to charity”,
  • select the ME Association as your choice, and,
  • decide what percentage of funds you want to donate.

eBay have produced this short video to help explain what you need to do. All these efforts allow you to easily support our valuable work.

Your donations are tax-deductible and as a charitable seller, eBay rewards your support by offering a fee credit based on your donation percentage to ME Association.

easyfundraising

I don’t know about you, but I can’t get out to visit the supermarket any more, so I have my groceries delivered to my door.

Each time I log-in to my supermarket, easyfundraising is activated, and my grocery spend automatically results in a donation to the ME Association.

  • To register: visit the ME Association easyfundraising page and enter your personal details,
  • easyfundraising is great for most forms of online shopping so long as the retailer is affiliated,
  • When you visit a connected retailer online, a prompt to activate easyfundraising will appear,
  • If no prompt appears, you can select easyfundraising at any time from the icon which will be installed on your browser.

Amazon Smile

Having M.E. also prevents me from socialising unless it is online or the occasional phone call with a similarly affected friend or a family member.

I tend to rely on Kindle as socialising has been replaced with reading as and when I can. Kindle is so much easier for me than holding my once-cherished larger print, hard-back books.

Now, with Amazon Smile I can buy my books and support the ME Association. Each time I purchase something from Amazon – that book, special treat or gift for someone – a percentage of my purchase is donated to the charity.

  • Visit Amazon Smile,
  • You may be prompted to log-in if you are already registered with Amazon or be asked to register if you not,
  • Enter ‘Myalgic’ in the ‘Pick your own charitable organisation’ box and press search when prompted,
  • You will see the ME Association at the top of the list. Just click ‘select’,
  • Ensure you visit Amazon Smile whenever you make a purchase in future (rather than the usual Amazon website). I find it easier to bookmark Amazon Smile on my browser.

You’ll find all the same products on Amazon Smile at all the same prices and Amazon will clearly mark which are eligible for their donation. You won’t need to make any further changes as your shopping cart and your wish lists will automatically be the same.

  • If you would like to learn more about Amazon Smile and the opportunity that it offers for you to donate to your favourite charity at no extra cost to you, please click here.

Tapping Case Study – Cutting Financial Family Ties

Imagine being in a situation where the rug was suddenly pulled out right from under your feet, leaving you in a financial crisis that threatened the livelihood of your family. That’s what happened to Teresa Mallon.

Check out her story below, and how she used Tapping to turn her whole situation around!

Teresa Mallon, a professional therapist and mother of three teenage boys, found herself in crisis a couple of years ago.

“My ex-husband stopped paying child support and my settlement disappeared. I was terrified, as in, madness kind of terror. I didn’t know what I was going to do to support my family, but I knew I had to do something.”

While searching online, she came across The Tapping Solution for Financial Success and Personal Fulfilment program. She took a deep breath and registered.

“I’m a good therapist, but not a good business person,” Teresa explained. “The course had me go deeply into my money story, which was new.”

As she moved through each of the weekly tapping modules, things started to change. A year and a half prior to the course, Teresa had interviewed for a part-time job in a rehab facility. “While I was doing the tapping course, the supervisor from that job called out of the blue and asked if I could start that week.” This helped her increase her income.

“There was something about having a sense of employment that seemed to affect my private practice, which began to grow. In eight months, the rehab position became untenable. I chose to leave it, which was a big deal.”

Teresa’s private practice got so busy that she paid off a $13,000 credit card debt in six months without touching her savings. She remembers the joy and success she felt when posting about it on The Tapping Solution Facebook page. “Everyone got caught up in that joy. There was so much camaraderie. I felt really successful.”

Another Challenge Awaited

But last year, Teresa’s worry returned. She had kept her credit card balance at 0, but she also wasn’t saving. So she decided to go through the financial success course again. “The first time I didn’t get through all the modules. This time, I committed to the full 49 days.”

In Teresa’s personal life, her youngest son, Ethan, was the only one of his group of friends who didn’t attend a private school, because she couldn’t afford it. He was lonely and unhappy during his first two years.

“As I went through the financial success course, I realized that my son was being economically punished. His dad was not paying, like my dad didn’t. His dad had a huge inheritance but doesn’t share it with his kids. And I felt how unfair that was. I cried for him and I cried for me.”

During one module of the course, Teresa did a lot of tapping on family money blocks. After delving into it, and releasing a lot of old family patterns, she felt confident enough to call the private school and ask about fees. “I never would have done that before the course.”

She called the school and spoke with the registrar. “I told her the whole story about Ethan and then asked what the tuition was. She said it was $12,000 a year. I thought, well, that’s that.”

But then, she asked Teresa for more details about Ethan and Teresa and their family’s situation. “I told her he’d had a speech delay, that he’d been essentially abandoned financially by his dad, how unhappy he was at the state school. She told me she was going to send us a packet and to let me know if we wanted to come take a tour of the school.” Even though Teresa was still unsure, she felt glad she had made the call.

The Cycle Is Broken

Several days later, the registrar called Teresa. She said, “I took your story to the principal and he wants to help. Write a letter and blow Ethan’s trumpet. Include copies of his reports, and we’ll see what we can do.”

Teresa was stunned, and she quickly typed up a letter on the computer. But after sending it to her sister for review, she felt it was too formal, and that she needed to write it from the heart.

So Teresa completely rewrote the letter, in pen and ink, and put it with the packet in the mail.

Once the school received the packet, they set up a meeting with the principal, Teresa, and Ethan. At the end of that meeting, the principal thanked her for her handwritten letter, and told her how touching it was. Then the unimaginable happened.

He told Teresa he could offer Ethan a place at the school for $3,000 a year instead of $12,000. Then, the family of one of Ethan’s friends came forward, telling Teresa that they would give her $2,500 each term toward Ethan’s education!

“The outcome from this incredible story is that Ethan is not being economically punished. The cycle has been broken.”

Now, Ethan is thriving at his new school, and Teresa has fully integrated tapping into both her personal and professional lives.

What’s next for Teresa? “I’d like to write a book about how tapping changed my life. Before tapping, I never would have thought I could do anything like that.”

Thank you for sharing your story with us, Teresa. Truly inspiring!

We want everyone to have that same opportunity to experience financial and emotional freedom, so we’ve created a financial success home study course for you called The Tapping Solution for Financial Success and Personal Fulfillment.

Sutta Study: The Failings of the World

sutta study equanimity

This article is part of Trike Daily’s Sutta Study series, led by Insight meditation teacher Peter Doobinin. The suttas, found in the Pali Canon, comprise the discourses the historical Buddha gave during his 45 years of teaching. Rather than philosophical tracts, the suttas are a map for dharma practice. In this series, we’ll focus on the practical application of the teachings in our day-to-day lives.

In the Lokavipatti Sutta (AN 8.6), the Buddha offers a teaching that guides us in our efforts to develop equanimity. Equanimity is steadiness of mind, unshakeableness, imperturbability. Theravada monk and Pali translator Thanissaro Bhikkhu defines equanimity as “an attitude of even-mindedness in the face of every sort of experience, regardless of whether pleasure and pain are present . . .” When we have equanimity, we remain balanced. It’s a mark of progress in dharma practice.

In the sutta, the Buddha speaks about “eight worldly conditions,” which are also known as the “eight vicissitudes.” They include four pairs of agreeable and disagreeable experience: gain and loss; status and disgrace; praise and censure; pleasure and pain. These are the conditions that we’re apt to get thrown by; they tend to make us lose our center. The Buddha says they’re conditions that the world “spins after.”

At the beginning of the sutta, the Buddha makes a key point. All human beings, he declares, are subject to these worldly conditions—the “run-of-the-mill person,” who is uninstructed in dharma practice, as well as the “well-instructed disciple” of the Buddha’s teachings. We may be inclined to believe that as we practice the dharma, we’ll no longer have to deal with disagreeable experience. But that isn’t the case. We’ll still confront unpleasant, disagreeable conditions. It’s crucial to understand this if we’re going to live with equanimity.

So, the Buddha asks, what is the difference between the person who doesn’t follow the path and the dedicated dharma student? For starters, the uninstructed person doesn’t recognize when the eight vicissitudes have arisen. He isn’t mindful. He doesn’t reflect. He doesn’t practice discernment. He doesn’t recognize that when gain or loss arise, it’s simply a reflection of “the way it is.” The run-of-the-mill person, when there’s gain, status, praise, or pleasure, doesn’t understand that the agreeable conditions, by their nature, will change, that they are impermanent. Eventually, in the place of experience of pleasure there will be an experience of pain; in the place of the experience of praise, there will be censure or blame. When the uninstructed person is faced with these worldly conditions, he becomes overwrought, obsessed with what’s going on. As the Buddha puts it, “his mind remains consumed” with the experiences of the eight vicissitudes. We may know what that is like. When we undergo a loss—a breakup or job loss—we may find ourselves caught in fast-moving currents of thinking. And the same thing may occur when we experience gain—we meet a new lover or find a new job—and we find ourselves, again and again, lost in thought about what has transpired.

What is the nature of our fixation? The run-of-the-mill person, the Buddha says, “welcomes” the arisen gain, status, praise, or pleasure. He engages in thinking informed by desire or wanting. He thinks about how he might hold on to the agreeable experience and perpetuate the agreeable conditions. The person who has achieved a certain status may allow himself to weave long and vivid narratives, reveling in the acclaim he’s received. He may feed on this sort of thinking, greedily, like a man gorging himself at a sumptuous buffet. He may think that this is what his life must necessarily, always, be like. There must always be acclaim. He may engage in thinking about how he might increase his status, garner even more renown.

Meanwhile, the uninstructed person rebels against the disagreeable experiences of loss, disgrace, censure, and pain. He proliferates thinking imbued with aversion. When he experiences disgrace or disrepute, his inner narrative may be infused with thoughts about how much he dislikes what’s going on. He may be overwhelmed with anger at the people whom he believes have engineered his downfall. He may be barraged with thoughts of negativity, despair, worry, and fear.

The upshot is: when the run-of-the-mill person is faced with the vicissitudes of life, he suffers. “He is not released, I tell you,” the Buddha says, “from suffering and stress.”

But the well-instructed disciple, the Buddha teaches, maintains equanimity in response to the eight worldly conditions. She isn’t thrown off balance. She remains centered, at ease, composed.

When the well-taught dharma student meets agreeable and disagreeable experience, she is mindful. She recognizes that she’s experiencing gain and loss, pleasure and pain, and so on. And she brings insight to her experience. At the heart of this insight—the root of equanimity—is the understanding that the conditions of life are subject to change and inherently stressful. She recognizes that the pleasure she experiences when she eats a wonderful meal will rather quickly pass. She recognizes that the praise she receives at work is also inconstant—the day after receiving accolades, she may make an error and be reprimanded.

The dharma student doesn’t let her mind “remain consumed” with her good fortune or bad fortune. She pays attention to her thinking. She questions the usefulness in engaging in thinking informed by desire for what’s agreeable and aversion to what’s disagreeable. And she understands that there’s as much suffering in “welcoming” as “rebelling.” Consequently, she abandons this sort of thinking.

The well-trained dharma student learns to direct her attention to the quality of equanimity inside her instead. Equanimity is a quality that is innate to human beings; it’s inner strength. As dharma students, we learn to become familiar with it.

The Buddha, in teaching equanimity to his son, Rahula, told him to develop a “mind like the earth.” The earth, the Buddha explained, is subject to all manner of disagreeable experience:  rain, snow, ice, wind. People throw all sorts of unclean things on it. But the earth isn’t horrified. It isn’t shaken. When conditions are agreeable, when the weather is pleasant, the earth doesn’t become exhilarated. It keeps steady, day after day, season after season. Nature, in fact, offers many examples of equanimity. It is one of the reasons the Buddha recommended going into nature. Recognizing the equanimity there, we recognize the equanimity inside ourselves.

The dharma student keeps her center by putting her mind on her breath. Equanimity is one of the factors of jhana, the Buddha’s concentration. By cultivating jhana through breath meditation, we’re able to maintain our center and keep the mind on the breath when confronted by agreeable and disagreeable experience.

The dharma student keeps her mind inside, in the body, on the breath. She doesn’t let her mind become preoccupied with gain and loss, status and disgrace, praise and censure, pleasure and pain. Understanding the impermanent, inconstant, stressful nature of these worldly conditions, she doesn’t give them too much weight. She doesn’t seek happiness in worldly things. Putting aside the “ways of the world,” she looks for happiness in what lays beyond conditioned things. She looks for happiness in that which isn’t subject to birth and death. She looks for a greater happiness.

The dharma student, developed in equanimity, puts her efforts, as the sutta indicates, toward getting to the further shore.

Premenstrual Syndrome, Female Hormones and ME/CFS by Dr Charles Shepherd | 25 September 2018

Dr Charles Shepherd, Hon. Medical Adviser, ME Association.

Today we launch a new leaflet “Premenstrual Syndrome, Female Hormones and ME/CFS” and provide an extract below.

The leaflet is available to members of the ME Association in the next issue of ME Essential magazine, and also available in our online shop (see bottom of page for details).

Introduction

The premenstrual syndrome (PMS) – also known as premenstrual tension and premenstrual disorder – is a collection of symptoms that appear every month around the time of menstruation.

Some of these symptoms also occur in ME/CFS.

So, it’s not surprising to find that a significant proportion of women with ME/CFS notice an exacerbation of their ME/CFS symptoms at this time.

In fact, the NICE guidance on PMS notes that ME/CFS should be considered when making a diagnosis of PMS.

This new ME Association information leaflet summarises what we currently know about PMS, how it can overlap with ME/CFS, and the various treatment options that are available. The information draws on guidance to doctors from NICE, the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) and National Association for PMS (NAPS).

What is PMS?

PMS symptoms start at some point after ovulation – the release of an egg from the ovary each month. Ovulation occurs about two weeks before the start of a period.

  • Symptoms tend to appear in the five days before the period starts. However, some women have symptoms that occur over the full two weeks or so leading up to the period.
  • Symptoms tend to worsen as the period approaches and then start to decline/disappear three to four days after the start of the period.

PMS is very common, with NAPS reporting that between 3% and 30% of women have some degree of PMS. For most women, PMS symptoms are mild and not particularly troublesome and may then disappear. However, 5% to 8% have more persistent and severe symptoms. PMS can occur at any age from puberty through to the menopause.

What causes PMS?

The precise cause remains uncertain. The most likely explanation involves the cyclical changes in female hormone patterns that occur during the menstrual cycle – with the release of the egg each month being the main trigger factor.

It appears that women become more sensitive to a female hormone called progesterone, which passes into the blood from the ovaries after ovulation. Over-sensitivity to this hormone reduces the level of two important brain chemical transmitters called serotonin and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA).

As the chemical transmitter changes involve serotonin, this may be relevant to ME/CFS because there is research evidence to show that this transmitter is also involved in ME/CFS. And some people with ME/CFS are very sensitive to drugs called SSRIs (selective serotonin uptake inhibitors) that alter serotonin levels in the brain.

  • Research into possible female hormone abnormalities involving oestrogen and progestogen in ME/CFS is summarised in a further leaflet covering the menopause and hormone research.

What are the symptoms?

PMS can cause a range of physical and psychological symptoms.

Physical symptoms include:

  • Backache
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Breast tenderness and/or pain
  • Clumsiness
  • Cognitive dysfunction – problems with memory, concentration, etc
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Swollen hands or feet
  • Weight gain
  • Worsening of pre-existing asthma, migraine-type headaches and cold sores

Psychological symptoms include:

  • Irritability, anger, aggression
  • Feeling more emotional than usual
  • Feeling tense or even ‘out of control’
  • Food cravings
  • Mood swings, anxiety and depression
  • Changes in appetite and sexual feelings

This new leaflet can be read in full in the November issue of ME Essential our exclusive magazine for members of the ME Association.

Tapping Case Study – Finding Personal Fulfilment

Sometimes, what you think you want and you really want are two different things. Getting out of your daily routine can often be the catalyst to finding that personal fulfilment you’re seeking, just like Carol experienced below.

Last December, Carol Frances was on an eight-week leave from her job after shoulder surgery. While scrolling through her social media feed, she came across a post from The Tapping Solution. “I was bored so I had a look. I did the first meditation on The Tapping Solution site and was blown away.”

Carol very much wanted to do Nick’s Financial Success and Personal Fulfillment 7-week course, but felt she couldn’t afford it. “My sister pointed out that I’d taken a crystal workshop, a Reiki training, and a therapy course that were much more expensive, but I’d found a way. I discovered that Nick offered a monthly payment plan, so I gave it a go.”

Carol explains that it was the personal fulfillment aspect of the course that she was interested in more than financial success. She had felt stuck for a long time, and what she actually wanted was to move herself forward into a more fulfilling life.

The first week, to Carol’s surprise, she cried throughout all of her tapping sessions.

“Whatever I tapped on, something would come up, some emotional situation from the past. I was amazed that I had so much anger. I’d done a lot of work on myself over the years. I thought I’d already done a lot of clearing.”

These old issues, Carol discovered, were affecting her financial and personal life.

During the first week, she was completely overwhelmed with what came out, So she decided to do Week One a second time. By the end, she felt clear and calm.

“I was able to start seeing how I viewed myself, where I am, and the self-imposed obstacles. I saw that I wasn’t being held back, but rather I was holding myself back with my attitude. I didn’t see that before because of my anger. It was quite transformative.”

The second week of the program brought even more insights to Carol.

“We were directed to write down what our goals were. I thought my goals were to were pay off my mortgage, go for a more senior position at work, buy a car, and finish sorting out my aging mom’s finances.”

By the end of the second week, she realized those goals weren’t actually what she wanted.

“I decided I wanted to work less, so I dropped some of my hours, which made things easier on me physically. I also realized that being alone in doing my mother’s finances wasn’t because I didn’t have help; it was because I hadn’t asked. Tapping helped me open up and allow help to get my mom sorted more easily.”

After Carol moved to part-time at her job, she assumed she wouldn’t be able to afford a new car, so she put that goal aside. But then, her current vehicle totally broke down, and she had to get a new one anyway.

“I don’t know how I’m doing it. I’ve dropped hours, which means lower wages each month, but I’m not in the red.”

Now Carol taps every morning. “When I am going to work, I get up 15 minutes earlier to meditate. I usually do Jessica’s morning clearing meditation, which keeps me calm while getting to work. Then if I have something that comes up during the day, I tap on it.”

Carol offers this advice for people considering Tapping: “Just try it. It’s so worthwhile. You learn so much about yourself, it helps you deal with stress in your life, and there are just so many benefits.”

Thank you for sharing your story with us, Carol.

We want everyone to have that same opportunity to experience financial and emotional freedom, so we’ve created a financial success home study course for you called The Tapping Solution for Financial Success and Personal Fulfillment.

Finding Relief from Chronic Pain

Chronic physical pain impacts over 100 million Americans – and millions more around the world. Why are so many suffering?

Let’s first look at some recent research demonstrating the links between stress/emotions and chronic pain…

In a Dutch research study with 121 women, 62 of whom were diagnosed with fibromyalgia (which causes chronic pain), pain was induced in two groups using electrical stimulus, first while recalling an emotionally neutral event, and then while recalling an event that made them feel sad and/or angry. All of the women felt more pain when recalling an event that made them feel sad and/or angry.

In a Stanford University research study, 15 participants were examined via fMRI during the first 9 months of new romantic relationships. All study participants completed 3 tasks while being subjected to moderate to intense thermal pain: (1) viewing a photo of their romantic partner; (2) viewing a picture of an equally attractive familiar acquaintance; (3) doing a word-association distraction task that had previously been shown to reduce pain.

Both the 1st and 3rd tasks reduced pain. But only during the 1st (looking at photo of their partner) did several reward-processing areas of the brain become active, reducing pain in the body.

In a George Washington University research study, lumbar CT scans of 52 patients who reported NO lower back pain were reviewed. The neuroradiologists who looked at the scans had no knowledge of the patients’ clinical histories. Of the entire group, 35.4% demonstrated disc abnormalities, stenosis, and other aging changes. These findings suggest that these physical abnormalities, which are often used to diagnose chronic pain, cannot be conclusively linked to chronic pain.

So what does all this research mean? Temporary pain, or “acute pain”, resulting from an accident, injury, surgery, etc., is a normal, healthy part of the body’s healing process. But why then, for millions of people around the world, does this pain become chronic?

The Science of Chronic Pain

Pain is defined as chronic when it lasts for a period of three months or more. When you feel pain, your body initiates the stress response. Chronic stress also contributes to chronic pain – by making you more prone to accident, injury, weight gain, insomnia, and more.

Chronic stress and chronic pain ARE related, and has been proven in a number scientific experiments and clinical trials. Here’s how stress contributes to chronic pain (and negatively impacts your life, relationships, waistline, and more) in 13 sad steps:

1. You think about a topic that often stresses you out, such as your pain, work, money, relationships, family, or something else.

2. Your amygdala (in your midbrain) senses danger.

3. Your amygdala helps to initiate your body’s fight-or-flight response to stress.

4. In fight-or-flight mode, your body releases adrenaline and the stress hormone cortisol and diverts blood away from your digestive tract, leaving you less able to digest food and absorb nutrients and more likely to gain weight.

5. In this physiological “crisis mode”, your muscles are oxygen deprived, which makes you more vulnerable to pain—from chronic illness, injuries, arthritis, fibromyalgia, migraines, stomach upset, and more.

6. In this state of heightened physiological alert, your brain’s creative center is deemed nonessential and shuts down. Down goes your problem solving, your creative skills, your intuition, your ability to connect with your body.

7. You feel increasingly irritable, isolated, and impatient. Your relationships suffer. Your pain won’t go away.

8. Stress affects your sleep. Your metabolism slows. Your body takes longer to heal.

9. Your body secretes even more cortisol, continuing the cycle of oxygen deprivation that contributes to your pain. It also wreaks more havoc on your digestion (and waistline), increases your blood pressure, and lowers your immune response.

10. After releasing too much cortisol for too long, your body goes into adrenal fatigue. You feel depleted, exhausted, and depressed. Your pain is now chronic.

11. You no longer have the energy to adhere to your exercise routine, your healthy eating, meditation, or yoga. Chronic pain seems to be running your life.

12. Your energy is low, and you have a hard time focusing. Your productivity declines further. Your relationships suffer. You’re still in pain.

13. You are stressed out. You feel depressed. Your muscles are chronically tense and oxygen deprived, making your chronic pain even more intense and more frequent. You need relief from your pain and your stress now!

Achieving Pain Relief

So what are the options available to you for relieving chronic pain?

Well, you could go the traditional route, visiting doctor after doctor, trying to figure out what exactly the problem is. You may get a diagnosis (or several), you’ll most likely be prescribed pills or painkillers (many with harmful side effects), and may even be presented with an invasive surgery as the only means of eliminating the pain (which may or may not work).

Or… you can try Tapping! This safe, inexpensive, and effective technique has had incredible results with relieving chronic pain by targeting those emotions and stressors in our lives that are connected to the pain.

Less is More

small buddha on a big rock

We spread thoughts of goodwill for all the world, that we don’t wish anyone any harm. We wish that all beings could find happiness. So why are we sitting here with our eyes closed? Why aren’t we going out there, making people happy?

Because happiness is something that has to come from within. It’s based on being skillful in the way you act, which includes not only your physical actions, but also your speech and the actions of your mind—and in particular, the act of intention. This is because it’s through our intentions that we shape the world we experience, along with the amount of pleasure or pain we take out of that experience. To formulate intentions that really do lead to happiness is a skill. And because it’s a skill, nobody else can master the skill for you; you can’t master the skill for anyone else. You can give other people advice, you can show them to some extent how to do things, but for them to find happiness requires that they take the issue of happiness seriously, that they learn how to be skillful in their approach to happiness. If you’re going to give them reliable advice or set a reliable example, you yourself need to learn how to be skillful, too.

So, both for the sake of our own true happiness and for the true happiness of others, this is why we’re sitting here meditating. We’re training the mind to be very attentive, continually attentive to what it’s doing, so that it can learn how to do it skillfully. This means that even though there is the quest for peace, the quest for stillness in the mind, it’s not just peace and stillness for its own sake. It’s for the sake of understanding what we’re doing to cause suffering, and what we can do to stop it. That’s the purpose of our understanding.

Related: Tricycle Teachings: Happiness

Last week I was teaching up in Canada, and the question came up: Isn’t the purpose of all this practice to find the ultimate truth about things? And the answer is No. We’re trying to find a particular truth that’s useful for a higher purpose, the purpose of true happiness. It’s truth with a purpose. After all, there are many truths of the world. We can talk about how lasting things are, and in some ways it’s true. We can talk about how ephemeral they are, and in some ways that’s true as well. We can talk about the happiness in relationships, and there really is happiness in relationships. But we can also talk about the suffering in relationships, and there’s a lot of that, too. The question is, what use comes from focusing on which truths? Where do they lead you?

Once, when I was first staying with Ajaan Fuang, there was another young monk who had ordained at his fiancée’s request. She wanted to make sure her husband had had some training as a monk before they got married. So he spent two weeks out there at the monastery and found that he liked the life of a monk a lot more than he had expected. When the night came for his parents and fiancée to pick him up and take him back to disrobe in Bangkok, Ajaan Fuang could sense that he was getting a little reluctant to go. So that night he gave a talk on how we’re not born alone. We’re born from our parents. We owe a debt to our parents, and we need to repay that debt.

A few days later, I was beginning to get concerned about my own debt to my father, and Ajaan Fuang said, “When we come to this world, we come alone. Nobody comes with us. Nobody hired us to come.”

Two different truths: both true, and the question is learning how to use those truths properly in the right context.

Which means that the uses of these truths are what’s important. The ultimate use is finding out how we create a lot of unnecessary stress and suffering for ourselves in spite of ourselves, and how we can put an end to it. That’s why we train the mind.

To see this clearly, we have to get the mind still. Get the mind with one object, so it can settle down and have a good solid foundation that doesn’t shift around all the time. The more you shift around, the less you see. You might think that the more territory you cover, the more sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile sensations you’ll see. But you don’t see them clearly. And the memory of what you do see is very impermanent.

When you try to gather up that kind of wealth—the wealth of memories and experiences—you find that it doesn’t stay with you. It’s like buying a huge shipload of lettuce, thinking it’ll supply you with all the lettuce you’ll need for the rest of your life. And, of course, the lettuce begins to rot pretty fast and after a while you can’t use it. You then have the burden of trying to throw it away.

So you need to get a different kind of knowledge, the kind of knowledge that doesn’t change. You find that it doesn’t require you to know a lot of things outside, but it does require you to know your mind very thoroughly. How does your mind process things? That’s where the stress and suffering come from.

The Buddha explains the causes of stress and suffering in a very elaborate sequence. It starts with ignorance and goes through many different factors. But one obvious point to notice is that many of the factors come prior to your sensory experience. In other words, the issue is all about what you bring to the experience. That’s what makes all the difference. This is why we train the mind: so that it can bring the right qualities, the right intentions, the right attention—paying attention to where there’s stress, and what can you do to put an end to it, by focusing on what you did to cause it. That kind of knowledge is useful in all circumstances, for it enables you to bring the right attitudes, the right qualities to bear, no matter what the situation.

So we start out here with our eyes closed, sitting still, to get the mind to settle down so that we can see it, so that we can develop some of these skills. But these skills are not just to be used when sitting here with our eyes closed. They’re for us to bring to any situation no matter what, no matter how complex, no matter how large and complicated. If we can bring the right attitudes to those situations, we don’t have to suffer. We don’t have to cause suffering for other people. They may not like what we say or do, because we can’t have any control over people’s likes and dislikes, which are pretty unreliable. But we can be firm in our intent not to cause anyone any harm.

This is the kind of knowledge and these are the kind of truths we’re looking for: the truth of what you’re doing right now. What is your intention right now? Is it a skillful intention? And skillful doesn’t mean just good, because you can have good intentions for others, but you can also have a lot of delusion at the same time, in which case your intention is not really skillful. When you’re looking for skillful intentions, you’re looking for intentions that aren’t founded on greed, aren’t founded on aversion, and aren’t founded on delusion. That’s what you’re working for.

That means you have to start with something immediately present and really obvious—like the breath. Just be with the breath as it comes in; be with the breath as it goes out. Part of the mind will complain that there’s not much happening, but the more space you give to the breath, the more you see what’s there. In other words, you don’t want to clutter up your mind with other thoughts. You have to realize in this case that less is more. The fewer things you’re thinking about, the more you’ll see right here, right now.

So whatever other concerns you may have about your situation at home, at work, or the world outside, put those concerns aside for the time being. Be as fully aware of the body, as fully aware of the breath as you can right now. Think of the breath as a whole-body process. It’s not just the air coming in and out of the lungs. It’s the flow of energy throughout the body, part of which is related to the flow of the blood and to the sense of aliveness in your nerves. Try to be sensitive to the whole body as you breathe in and breathe out. Notice if there’s any tension or tightness in any part of the body. Allow it to relax. If there’s a sense of nourishment and refreshment, allow that to expand. Ask yourself: What would be the most refreshing way to breathe right now? See how the body responds. And stick with it, trying to stay on top of the body’s breath-needs and providing whatever you sense it needs with each and every breath.

Because it’s in sticking with the breath that the mind develops some steadiness. Once your gaze is steady, it can begin to see other movements in the mind as they happen. But for the time being, you don’t want to pay them any attention. You want to pay attention more to the movements of the breath. If there are any thoughts coming up, you can just let them go, let them go, let them go. Again, less is more. The fewer the thoughts cluttering up your awareness, the more you’ll sense how the breath can fill the range of your awareness. The more sensitive you are, the more likely the mind is to settle down, to have a sense of ease and wellbeing right here, right now. Comb through any tangles of tension in the body, any knots of blockage in the breath. The more demanding you are in not allowing the tension to stay, the more subtleties you’ll see. It’s like being the princess who couldn’t even have a pea under many mattresses—the difference here being that if you sense any little peas under the mattress, you take them out.

That’s the work at the beginning of the meditation: ironing things out, smoothing things out, asking questions about the breath. What kind of breathing would feel good now? And what would feel good now? Because sometimes you can breathe in a way that stays steadily the same for long periods of time, and the body feels fine. At other times, one type of breathing might feel good for a couple breaths and then not so good with the next breath, so you’ve got to change. The important thing is that you stay with the breath as your main topic, to develop what is called singleness of preoccupation, which means both that you hold to one preoccupation, the breath, and you make it single in the sense that it’s the one thing that fills the whole range of your awareness, with breath energy flowing through the body, even around the body. Think of it as a cocoon around the body, protecting you from outside energies. See how long you can maintain that perception.

Related: Foundations of Mindfulness

It’s an act of balancing. If you’ve ever noticed people walking across a tightrope, you notice that they don’t stay perfectly balanced all the time. They shift a little bit to the right, a little bit to the left, and then they correct, like those old-fashioned scales that swing back and forth before finally coming into balance. If something tips it in one direction, the scale corrects itself, swinging back and forth until it’s in balance again. The ability to regain your balance is what’s going to keep you here.

Our mind is often like the mind of an addict, the sort of person who says, “I’ve been smoking pot for the last five years but now I’m totally clean, totally beyond that. I’ll never be tempted to smoke again.” That kind of attitude is going to get him back into smoking pot pretty soon. The way to stay away from your addiction is to realize that there are certain things that attract you, so you have to be on your guard, armed with antidotes for every temptation. You need to have antidotes to bring yourself back into balance. So realize that there’s always a possibility of falling out of balance, but you can master the skills that can get you back in.

That’s what the directed thought and evaluation at the beginning of right concentration are all about. If you find the mind slipping off the breath, you can get it back right away. If it slips off in another direction, you get it back right away. You keep regaining your balance no matter how much it wobbles. After a while, things finally settle down. You get more and more absorbed in the breath. There’s a greater sense of oneness. A greater sense of concentration, composure, assurance that this is where you really want to be, and it’s all right where it is right now. At that point, you don’t have to adjust or analyze the breath any more. Just stay with “full body breath, whole body breath, aware, aware.” It’s as if the awareness and the body and the breath penetrate one another. There’s a strong sense of oneness. It’s from this oneness that we can begin to see things clearly.

The important thing right now is just to make sure that your foundation is strong, and that you do whatever is needed to maintain and regain that sense of balance. You may find the mind going into its old habits of trying to gather up this, gather up that, so remember: Less is more. Just the breath. Just the breath. You don’t need anything else. If you give a lot of attention to the breath, you begin to see its potentials and can take advantage of them. You find that a sense of ease and wellbeing with the breath can do a lot more for you than any amount of status, material gain, praise, outside pleasures—any of the ways of the world. A sense of ease and well-being that come from within: This is really all you need because it fully nourishes the mind right now.

A well-nourished mind gives rise to more mindfulness and ultimately to the knowledge that can put an end to defilement—which is an even greater example of the case that less is more. The fewer your defilements, the more freedom you have. As the Buddha said, when he gained awakening, he dwelled with an unrestricted awareness, free from any attachments, free from any constriction. It’s the greatest wealth there is.
