Professional racing driving, Martin Plowman, steps up to support national charity Anxiety UK.

British professional racing driver, Martin Plowman, becomes a celebrity patron of leading national charity Anxiety UK. Having personal experience of anxiety, Martin is passionate about supporting the charity’s efforts to increase awareness and access to support for those experiencing anxiety, stress and anxiety based depression.

At the age of 29 years, Martin Plowman has shown himself to be an incredibly successful racing driver, becoming both a Le Mans class winner in LMP2 and WEC World Champion in 2013.

The challenges of the racing world, however, are not the only ones that Martin has been striving to conquer. For years, Martin has experienced debilitating anxiety and panic attacks.

In joining forces with Anxiety UK, Martin hopes to send out a message to others that anxiety is not something to be ashamed of, nor does it have to be something that prevents you from leading a successful, accomplished and meaningful life.

Anxiety UK are delighted to have Martin on-board to support their continued work in supporting those who experience anxiety, stress and anxiety based depression, and to help raise awareness of the importance of changing attitudes around mental health. Over the years Anxiety UK has welcomed the support of a range of celebrity patrons, who are passionate about the work of Anxiety UK and ensuring that support is available to those who need it most.

The partnership between Martin Plowman and Anxiety UK will be kick-started with an official feature interview with Martin in the charity’s quarterly magazine, Anxious Times, this September. Going forward Martin is looking forward to engaging with Anxiety UK’s on-going campaigns in terms of both raising awareness and fundraising.

Nicky Lidbetter, CEO at Anxiety UK, says:  “I am delighted that Martin has chosen to support Anxiety UK through joining our team of celebrity patrons. He is living proof that anxiety does not need to define a person and that with appropriate support and information, it is entirely possible to function at a high level in spite of anxiety.  The world of competitive sport can be a difficult space to open up about issues such as mental health and anxiety, and in being as candid as Martin is about his personal experience of anxiety, he is playing a vital role in challenging stigma.  It is fair to say that Martin is a wonderful role model for others”.

Martin Plowman, professional racing driver, says:  “I’m proud to lend my support to Anxiety UK. I have suffered with debilitating anxiety and Panic attack disorder for as long as I can remember. Since being diagnosed in 2014, I have sought help to embrace ways to manage my symptoms to not let it affect my career. My hope is that my story will inspire at least one person who feels helpless, or embarrassed to ask for help and enable them to seek the help they need to be able to chase their dreams.”
